Our Policies

Privacy and Dignity

We support each participant, or their designated representative, to take part in decisions about services, exercise lifestyle choice and control, and do so while respecting the rights of others.

Purpose

Sam-Rena values the dignity and privacy of every participant we support. We believe all people have a right to privacy and dignity, and that personal choices and lifestyles should be respected and supported wherever possible.

  • The rights to privacy and dignity of participants are clearly understood by team members.
  • Participants and/or their representatives are satisfied with the respect and accommodations provided for privacy and dignity.
  • Participants have control over their environment and their individual needs are met.

Scope

  • This policy applies to all employees, volunteers, contractors, participants, and visitors.
  • The right to privacy and dignity of every individual is recognised and protected at all times.

Policy in Practice

Participant Choice and Independence

Participants are supported to achieve their highest possible independence, maintain friendships, engage with family and community, and take an active role in planning and choosing services.

Choice of Clothing

Participants are supported to choose clothing that reflects their comfort, personality, and preferences. Assistance with dressing is provided only with consent and where requested.

Decision-Making and Participation

Participants are included in decisions that affect their care, including medication, food, environment, and lifestyle activities. Respecting participant choice protects dignity and promotes meaningful involvement.

Freedom of Expression

Sam-Rena’s management, staff, volunteers, and contractors maintain an environment where people can express themselves and make choices without fear, restraint, or discrimination.

Addressing the Individual Respectfully

Staff always ask each person how they prefer to be addressed. Names and titles are never assumed, as personal identity and dignity must be respected.

Food Presentation and Mealtime Dignity

Meals are planned with participants, based on their preferences, and served in a respectful and appealing way. Food quality, freshness, and participant input are prioritised.

Personal Belongings and Private Space

Staff knock, wait, and seek permission before entering private rooms. Personal belongings are not moved or accessed without consent, and all items are returned to their original place.

Hygiene and Personal Care

Staff provide personal care with sensitivity and permission, explaining actions while assisting with bathing, dressing, grooming, wound care, or medication to maintain comfort and dignity.

Social Participation

Participants are encouraged and supported to engage in social activities on-site and in the community, including time with family and friends, to strengthen identity, wellbeing, and quality of life.

Pain Awareness and Management

Our person-centred approach includes recognising potential pain indicators and reporting changes promptly. Consistent caregiving supports early identification and timely response.

Meaningful Conversation and Connection

Staff are encouraged to spend genuine social time with participants, listen actively, and engage respectfully to support emotional wellbeing and dignity.
